El IV Congreso Latinoamericano de Biología Matemática surge a partir un compromiso asumido por investigadores latinoamericanos para desarrollar y fortalecer el trabajo interdisciplinario de modelización matemática en las biociencias, alentado el intercambio de conocimientos a través de las fronteras, uniendo esfuerzos en proyectos conjuntos y participando en la formación de recursos humanos a escala regional.

The IV Latin American Congress on Mathematical Biology emerges from the commitment made by Latin American researchers with the purpose of developing and strengthening the interdisciplinary work of mathematical modeling in the Biosciences, encouraging the exchange of knowledge across borders, uniting efforts in joint projects, and participating in the training of new scientists in the region.

This proposal originated in the activities developed by the Latin American Society for Biomathematics on the one hand, and the Latin American Network for Mathematical Ecology on the other. After several years of parallel activities, the former with the Latin American Congress on Biomathematics and the latter with the Latin American Meetings on Mathematical Ecology, and following a suggestion by Brazilian colleagues, it was proposed to unite members of both groups into a unique society. In 2001, the first of the joint meetings (X CLAB and V ELAEM), took place in Campinas, Brazil . In 2002, the Congress was held in Guanajuato, Mexico, and in 2003 in Armenia, Colombia .

Durante el Congreso 2002 en Guanajuato, se sentaron las bases de la nueva Sociedad Latinoamericana de Biología Matemática (SOLABIMA) según las cuales la Comisión Directiva será integrada por colegas de un único país. Durante la Asamblea Anual, se eligen el país y los integrantes de la Comisión Directiva que actuará durante el año subsiguiente y que a ella le es encomendada la organización del Congreso. En la Asamblea realizada durante el Congreso 2003 se eligió a Tandil, Argentina, como sede del Congreso 2005, siendo integrantes de la Comisión Directiva:

During the 2002 Congress in Guanajuato, the bases for the new Latin American Society for Mathematical Biology (SOLABIMA) were laid. The Governing Board shall be constituted with members from only one country. During the Annual Assembly, the country and the members of the Governing Board that will conduct the Society during the subsequent year are elected, and they will be in charge of organizing the Congress. During the Assembly held in 2003 in Colombia , Tandil was chosen as the location of the 2005 Congress, as well as the members of the Governing Board:

Para esta nueva edición del Congreso Latinoamericano de Biología Matemática (XIII CLAB y VIII ELAEM), que cubrirá temáticas variadas tales como Genética de Poblaciones, Epidemiología, Toxicología, Dinámica de Poblaciones, Manejo de Recursos Naturales, Fisiología o Biología Computacional, se plantean dos semanas de actividades:

In this new edition of the Latin American Congress on Mathematical Biology (XIII CLAB & VIII ELAEM) , in which various subjects will be covered (Population Genetics, Epidemiology, Toxicology, Population Dynamics, Natural Resource Management, Physiology, Computational Biology), two weeks of activities are being planned.

•  La primera semana, del 31 de Octubre al 5 de Noviembre, se dedicará al dictado de cursillos sobre temas de actualidad destinados a estudiantes de postgrado y avanzados de grado, pero donde investigadores deseosos de actualizarse en otros temas serán bienvenidos. Estos cursillos serán dictados por investigadores de prestigio internacional.

•  La segunda semana, del 6 al 11 de Noviembre, estará dedicada a las actividades del Congreso propiamente dicho, con sesiones simultáneas de comunicaciones, conferencias plenarias, presentaciones de posters, mesas redondas, etc.

•  The first week, from October 31 st to November 5 th , will be devoted to short courses on the state-of-the art for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, but researches wishing to be updated in particular subjects are welcome to attend. These courses will be taught by prestigious international researchers.

•  The second week, from November 6 th till November 11 th , will be dedicated to the usual Congress activities, with simultaneous sessions, plenary conferences, poster presentations, round tables, etc.

Se prevé la publicación de un libro de resúmenes, Actas del Congreso Latinoamericano de Biología Matemática, previa aprobación del Comité Científico. Se tratará con los Editores de las revistas científicas internacionales Bulletin of Mathematical Biology y Ecological Modeling la publicación de trabajos completos seleccionados por el Comité Científico luego de someterlos a referato internacional.

A book containing the abstracts, Proceedings of the Latin American Congress of Mathematical Biology, will be published with the approval of the Scientific Committee. We are negotiating the publication of full papers, previously selected by the Scientific Committee and analyzed by reviewers, in international journals such as Bulletin of Mathematical Biology and Ecological Modeling.
