A group of Latin American participants in the Second Course of Mathematical Ecology made in Trieste in 1986, created a Latin American meeting of Mathematical Ecology called "Encuentros Latino Americanos de Ecología Matemática" (ELAEM). Since then that founding group and his disciples have participated actively in international meetings, specially in Trieste.

  • In August of 1987 was made the First ELAEM in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • The Second ELAEM was made in Guanajuato, Mexico, in August of 1991.
  • The Third ELAEM was in Luján, Argentina, in August of 1994.
  • The Fourth ELAEM had the particularity that was organized in a binational way: a part was made in Valparaíso, Chile and the other part in Mendoza, Argentina.

The life will say if we have advanced or not into development of a multidisciplinary Science in our region. We thought the fact that these meetings are made, constitutes a success. In this hard time for Science improvement, we need to produce practical results generally linked with production of economical goods in short time. This event, is the first in its type in our continent, and it is organized with the purpose of promote the interchange of ideas between Latin American investigators that work in problems of Mathematical Ecology.
