STUDY SITE

The Wetland region in Mercosur covers a great area of South America that includes Pantanal, Ńembucú and the Esteros del Iberá. Wetland ecosystems are unique in magnitude and biodiversity, with presence of several in danger species, either animals and vegetal.
The study site for this project was the region known as Esteros del Iberá. This Argentinean northeast region is a large watershed composed by marshland (“esteros”), wetland (“malezales”) and dammedland (“embalsados”). It is possible to view it localization in the Del Plata basin in the next map.

A distinctive attribute of the Iberá System is the fact that water enter only through rains and not by rivers, this is one of the reasons for it very low contamination. The isolation of the region contributes to keep it ecological stability protecting it from human activities. It is important to note that in a program, for a sustainable developing and management for this region, is necessary to incorporate the relationship between the ecosystem and the human population in the region. Following this goal the proposal was developed in collaboration with local institutions and it was presented to the European Union.

This project is part of the SAC-C Mission, coordinate in Argentine by CONAE. The satellite information provided had a central role during the project.
